So on Thursday before class, I met with Fawaz! He is a young guy from Kuwait who has been studying here for about a year. As we walked down to Strozer, he told me a little about himself and why he was studying English. I told him about how I am from Tallahassee and he asked a few question about the city, which I was happy to answer.
When we got to Strozer and got started, I asked him what he felt like he needed to improve on with his English. He was very quick to answer. He wants to improve vocabulary and pronunciation. Now having been talking to him for about 20 minutes, I got the feeling that even though he has been here a year, he had not been speaking much English out of the class room. I asked him about what he does for fun, and he confirmed that he has a group of friend who are all Arabic speakers, and they all do things together. I explained to him that using his English outside of the classroom was vital for the improvement of his skills.
So we started developing a plan. I asked him what he wanted form me, and I told him what I could offer. As planned we are meeting once a week from 3:00 to 4:00 on Thursdays, and he asked if he could bring some of his friends to the tutoring sessions, and I encouraged him to do so. As a pronunciation example, I puled out sever words that began with moth long and short vowels, and we worked on how to say them and where the stress might go on the word or sentence. I also told him to stop me if I used a word or phrase he didnt know. He did, and we began making a list of words. I would be sure to use them several times during the session, and at the end, I would ask him to use them in a sentence, and I would respond to that sentence, thus developing a textual dialog with the new words. This session only had two words because it was a more low key lesson... they were "To grow up (with)" and "Individual/ly." We will go over them again at the start of the next session.
We are planning on the next session to go over some dialog, and work on new words, as well as proper stress for questions and speaking clearly in general. Over all I would say it was a successful first session.
