Don_M_TP-#1_Adult

I met this foundation-level tutee at CIES, and he immediately started asking the names for object around up us (e.g. vending machine, grass, sidewalk).  I gave him a lift to his apartment complex, and we started our assessment in the complex's recreation building.  He has just arrived in the U.S..  He has no previous experience in English, and he is fluent only in Arabic.  All of his roommates speak English.  He expressed and interest in learning how to order food, but seems to have no interest in U.S. culture.  He plays no sports, and watches movies and media programs on his T.V.  He plans to major in Media, and his goal is to pass the IELTS. He asked to focus on vocabulary and English.

I viewed his Foundation grammar workbook to get an idea of how to develop lesson plans for him.  It consisted of matching the sentence to the picture.  One indication of the amount of vocabulary he needs, is that he knew the word for 'mouse', but not 'rat' which was the example in his workbook.  I see I will need to develop lesson plans with many visuals.

He has been to a mall in Orlando were he heard Spanish being spoken.  He asked about those people speaking Spanish and the many Black people speaking other than English.  So I explained the the ethinc and cultural diversity in Florida.  This seemed to interest him.
