Bobby - TP_child 3
This post will be shorter than my last few regarding tutoring Jun. All we did tonight was read. This seems to be the recurring theme: I'll prepare some materials for us to work on, but Jun invariably has a quiz on a new book the following day. I'm perfectly fine with working with Jun on his reading skills. In fact, I'd even say his reading speed and comprehension is getting better. This is very exciting because we no longer have to spend unnecessary minutes on short passages. Tonight's book was another in the Magic Treehouse series. This time, Jack and Annie were sent on yet another insane time-traveling mission. They were in Hawaii, learning how to surf and running away from tsunamis with their friends, Boka and Kama. I actually like these books for several reasons. I think they're very level-appropriate for Jun. He seems to enjoy reading them, and will often stop and ask me questions about certain words or passages. One of the great things about these books is that, despite their reading level, it is clear that one of the main goals is to increase vocabulary. I would stop Jun at certain words and ask if he knew what they meant. When he didn't, I took the opportunity to explain them and draw little pictures so that he understood. We went over 'churning', 'swell', 'tsunami' (this was particularly fun because he had a lot of trouble say this...I think he started rattling off in Korean at one point), 'looming', 'flit', and 'lei'. Jun has been getting perfect scores on all his reading tests since we started working together. Before, his mother told me that he would get mostly 60s or 80s. I like to think that our tutoring sessions are helping him, but either way, I really enjoy tutoring the kid and I think he feels the same way!
