Bobby - TP_CIES 2
I was supposed to meet with three CIES students, but again, only one showed up. This time it was Carla from Venezuela. She's a level 2 student who is able to carry on basic conversations, but has trouble with grammar. She asked specifically that we work on present perfect tense. Essentially, she was getting confused with present perfect, past perfect, and their respective continuous tenses. I could understand where she was coming from because I remember how hard it was to learn those same tenses in her language! I explained that the present perfect will always be the conjugated form of [to have] + the past participle. She seemed to understand it pretty well, but I think the main problem was the irregular verbs such as 'to be', 'to give', 'to take', and so on. I explained when one would use the tense and how it is somewhat "in between" the past and present tenses (if looking at them on a timeline). After some note-taking, we just looked over a few of her class assignments. There weren't many errors. Most of the teacher's edits were "beautiful mistakes," so to speak, but Carla just did not know how to change them. I helped her out with these few and let her know that I thought she was doing very well with English. We will meet again next week. Hopefully, more than just one student will show up!
