Nicole TP9 - (CIES Abdulrahman)
Abdulrahman came to my house on Wednesday after I finished with my other session. I had planned for a listening activity that would also incorporate some speaking tactics as well. We watched a docmentary about fishing, I paused every so often to check comprehension and get Abdul to recap what was going on to me. As we got closer to the I began to ask questions about earlier scenes to refresh his memory. This went very well and sewayed us into our next activity. After watching teh video about fishing and discussing some of the vocabulary words, the word "hunter" really stuck. I asked Abdulrahman if he liked to hunt, this is when things started to get interesting. Abdul told me all about the animals he killed to cook in Saudi Arabia; goat, sheep, camel, and chicken. (Sheep and camerl being his favorite) All the while I was correcting his grammar and taking not of the things he recurrently struggled with. After a long disscussion about the preparatin of teh food and such, he told me he still prepares these things here in Tallahassee. Abdul then showed me a video of him slaughtering a goat in his backyard with his son, it was a completely different cultural experiance for me and definitely one I didn't expect to happen here in town. Overall it looked pretty humane so I wasn't freaked out. Next we went on to do some listening activities on esl-labs.com. The site has some really great activities and ideas, be sure to check it out!
