I can't say that I know how to write about a class observe, but I am very impressed with this teacher's relationship with her class, class control, and lesson flow. But here goes.
The class observed on Thursday 10/31/12 was Speaking Group 1C EL-HE
The Teacher wrote the lesson activities on the white board, took roll call, reminded the students of an after class student event, and initiated conversation by commenting on the students Halloween costumes.
The teacher addressed students by first name. The class atmosphere is causal and friendly. The teacher took time to introduce an intern and a TEFL student who were observing the class, and she prompted the students to ask questions of the observers. She patiently waited for student to formulate and ask questions.
The teacher then started on lessons activities which are: Vocabulary review with pictures displayed on an overhead projector (class activity), Making and labeling a house (group activity) and Pronunciation/Stress/Intonation (class activity). The teacher moved around the class during the group activity in which she had paired students from different countries. She encouraged the observers to move around the class and to assist as needed. At the end of this timed activity, the teacher collects the projects to be scored after class.
The class flowed fluidly from activity to activity. The teacher introduced each activity prior to starting it. For example, she discussed important vs. less important words before starting the Pronunciation/Stress/Intonation class activity. She encouraged students to give examples. She corrected the class by repeating the sentence with the correct intonation. Then she asked the class to try speaking the sentence again.
This teacher is very positive and obviously enjoys her class.
Sounds like the climate of the class was good for learning. Hope I will be able to create that climate consistently in the future!
