Don_M_TP #7 (Child)

I presented reading comprehension in a modified FCAT format.  FCAT reading comprehension is short stories followed by multiple-choice questions.  My three activities consisted of three short stories followed by either multiple-choice or short answer questions or by fill-in the-blank questions.  I presented the first story as follows:  1) the tutee listened while I read aloud, 2) the tutee read aloud, and 3) then tutee answered multiple-choice and short answer questions.  His score was 4/6.  For the second story, the 1) tutee read silently, and 2) then answered the multiple-choice and short answer questions.  His score was 1/6.  For the third story, the 1) tutee first read silently, and 2) then, using a transcript of the story with words missing, tried to fill-in the appropriate words.

As we reviewed each activity, I reminded him to refer to the story for the correct answers.  For example, one questions asked about the meaning of the word "prey" in paragraph 9.  In the story, the word "prey" was used to mean both as a noun, "an animal that is seized for food", and as a verb, "to seize and devour an animal".  The fill-in the blank lesson was useful for introducing the tutee to commonly used phrases such as "The local landscape is a mixture of rocky, wooded, and open spaces which is "perfect" for pumas.  The term used here is "perfect for".  I gave exampled in sentence form for each new expression.

I think he actually learned something.
