I met with Carlos for conversation. As usual, he was very eager to speak in
our conversation session. He told
me about the writing assignments he had to do. He shared with me that it was difficult to write in the
American form of writing. One of
his “papers” was on crimes and the justified reasons for some minor crimes that
people committed due to poverty and the need to survive. We discussed that his paper needed more
convincing proofs to support his argument. We also worked on saying some big numbers such as 4,234,800,
6,013,500…
Carlos is working hard on words that begin with an “r”. It seemed that letter gave him a lot of
trouble. Even when I asked him to
repeat the words a couple of times, I couldn’t understand what he tried to
say. They were not
comprehensible. In other areas, I
saw improvement since our first conversation. He is working very hard in all of his CIES classes and the
TOEFL class. He loves to listen to
music to learn English. I
introduced a different era of music to him, John Denver’s, and he seemed to
like it a lot. He wants to improve
in his pronunciation. I sent him
some websites that provide good pronunciation practices for ESL students.
Carlos is very motivated to learn. He tries very hard and is aware that he is older than many
in his group who were also sent by the Brazilian government to America to learn
English and to pursue their studies in American universities.
