I met with Marco again for conversation during his lunchtime. Marco had to give a small “speech”
today in class, so he asked me if I could be his audience. He spoke about his hobbies on reading
books and watching television.
Right away, he needed help with the word “hobbies” because I could not
understand what he said, even after he repeated the word to me twice. We worked on sentence structure and
articles. His teacher told him to
make three slides on PowerPoint to accompany his speech. He used the words “speak” and “speech”
incorrectly.
Today was our third day for conversation. I can see improvement in Marco’s
speaking. He was more at
ease. He told me that he tried
very hard to think in English instead of translating in his head from Spanish
to English. I remembered Marco’s first session. He was more reserved.
He went on to tell me in his speech why he likes to read and
to watch T.V. He had trouble with present perfect, and it was hard for him to
recall the order of the phrase. I
helped him to rephrase what he tried to say so his speech would be smoother. We worked on the correct pronunciation
for the word “learn”.
Marco is very teachable. He tried hard to remember what he heard. I also suggested to him that he needed
to show more confidence in his speech. He was able to practice his speech
several times with me.
We then worked from the speaking materials that I had. He was very glad to have the materials
to practice. I also gave him a
website where he could do more exercises to improve his speaking and listening
skills in his spare time.
