Well
today there was really nothing going on, so we decided just to meet at the
front door at CIES, and just enjoy the cool weather. Hamad being from Kuwait,
instantly started talking about the weather and started asking if this was
normal. I had to explain to him, that even though we were in Florida, it still
could get cold this far north… I mean, not really cold, but colder than he was
expecting. That got us talking about different places in American, and how the
cultured differed. I explained that when you mix a country that has the size of
America with the amount of people here, different subcultures develop. He
started telling me about the places he has been (Orlando.) Upon hearing that I didn’t
like south Florida, he laughed and though I was joking… he has a serious live
for Orlando. I drew him a map of the States ( a very poor one) and told him
about the different kinds of people and cultures that are perceived in these
areas. Having a love for Orlando, California was obviously the next step, but
he had a lot of questions about New York. He liked the idea of many different
races and peoples living in the same city. I talked a little about what to
expect, and the things he could do in his English studies if he wanted to prepare
for going up there. I have him some names of some actors that had Northeast
accents, and told him it might be a good idea to work on listening to that
dialect.
