Composition EL-HE with Felicia Ciappetta
The class was started class with a "bell ringer" quiz which was:
Write 5 sentences for each question.
What do you do every morning before you come to CIES?
What did you do this past Saturday?
What time is it in your country and what is your best friend doing?
She let the students write the sentences and went around class and reviewed. Told students where to focus their attention but had them work with partners to find the errors.
I found it interesting that she did not stop "table talk" just required English only.
With checking and all, the 10 minute assignment took about 30 minutes.
Lots of energy. Knew student's names well, which I think is a feat considering how diverse they are. A little faster speaking but used lots of hand gestures. High energy teacher.
She chose two students to teach their tables the 3 parts to writing, but it turned into a "real group effort" to get it right.
1) brainstorming
2) organizing or outlining
3) writing/drafting
Felicia spends lots of time giving examples and constantly checks work "to guide not correct."
She allowed the students two minutes to brainstorm about all ideas about their country, three minutes to come up with 3 different ideas about one brainstorming topic.
She never talked down to students, always assumed they new the answers, they just needed nudging.
Gave examples all along the way, but made the students help with the examples.
Felicia constantly praised students but used qualifiers such as "Your writing is getting so much better, I am so excited, but you are still missing something."
The class flew by, but a lot of information was presented.
