I met with my tutees, Xiao-Wei and Marcos. Daree did not come today. I asked Xiao-Wei and Marcos whether
they wanted to work on something that I brought or to work on some thing that
they learned in class. Both of
them told me that they would like to work on pronunciation of different fruits
and vegetables that was covered in class.
We went over about 25-30 fruits and another 25-30
vegetables. They made complete
sentences in simple present using the names of the fruits and vegetables. Some of the words were much harder for
Xiao-Wei to pronounce. For
example, words that begin with “bl”, “br”, “th”… gave her trouble. We also worked on listening
comprehension by them listening to me describe what regions produce the various
kinds of fruits. I explained to
them that Turkey and turkey are the same words, but with very different meanings. When I mentioned that Turkey
produces a lot of apricots, Xiao-Wei used the gesture as if holding a big
drumstick. They also told me, in
complete sentences, the kind of fruit that they do not see often in their own
countries.
They both wanted to learn more about the prepositions “in”,
and “on”. I explained these to
them and gave them example sentences that included phrases like “in March”, “in
summer”, and “in 2013”. They both
took turns making complete sentences.
We also went over the prepositions “on” and “at” and when to use
them. For example, “I get up early
on Monday morning. I get up early
in the morning. I read at
lunchtime. I finish at 2:00.”
