Wednesday I was finally able to get two of my tutoring partners togetehr at teh same time. (HOORAY!) Ahmed and Sultan met me at the Starbucks in Strozier library in our regular booth, and we started off with come conversational stuff about how their week was going. Both of them have seemed to progress since our first meeting a few weeks ago. Ahmed has gained an immense vocabulary that I am very impressed with. He is very frustrated with one of his classes and is not happy with the instructor because of his accent, and explained that this is part of the reason he plans to go study in California instead. Sultan is starting to master some foundational concepts, I am really proud considering he isn't that enthusiastic about school in general.
The guys have several quizzes this week; listening, grammar, and composition. Ahmed felt very confident and Sultan almost the opposite. I decided we would do some exercises using their vocabulary from the book. We started by going over all the vocabulary words from their chapters, they covered colors and clothing. I had the guys take turns reading the list and pointing at each item as they went. I had them then try to do it without the list from the book. Next we worked with composition, each page had a seen with people in different outfits to describe. I had Ahmed and Sultan write five sentences to share with each other. While they read aloud I listened for content and grammar errors. Once finished I corrected their content errors aloud, we then looked at the papers to correct grammar. They then re-read their corrected sentences. We took a coffee break and I was fortunate enough to watch what I like to call the "Sultan Ahmed comedy act." Today the bit was about ordering coffee and the proununciation of the word "Frappuccino." These two are such charaters and I really enjoy spending time with them.
After everyone had their coffees we each picked a part of the vocabulary list to make flashcards, making sure each word was covered. Then we read the words, providing a sentence to go with. We then pointed to the picture in the books and magazines laying nearby that coordinated. Time was up after this activity so we went our seperate ways and agreed to meet next week at the same time and place.
