My sixth
conversation partner meeting was very spur of the moment. After observing a composition class this
morning, I decided to sit on a bench outside of CIES and do some homework. Soren texted me and asked what I was
doing. When I told him where I was, on
his lunch break, he came outside and asked me if I wanted to get something to
eat with him. He was excited to show me
the bag of items he received for the Jingle Bell Run this Saturday. We walked over to Mom and Pop’s (I think
that’s what it’s called) food hut, which is usually between Diffenbaugh and
Williams. I got a burger and lemonade
(which was really good), and Soren got a hotdog. We sat by the tiny fountain by the music
building and talked. He told me all
about his weekend. He went out of town
with his host family to one of their family member’s birthday parties. He emphasized how much he loved talking to
his “fake dad’s” father, who is 92, while watching the FSU game. He said that it was cool to talk to a man
that has experienced a lot of things and even fought in World War Two. Soren’s vocabulary is improving, and I’ve
noticed him trying out grammatical structures that he’s not totally comfortable
with just to practice. He always looks
at me quizzically for reassurance when he’s unsure if what he’s saying is
correct. I’m glad he’s making such an
effort. He’s doing a good job. After finishing his first hotdog, Soren
suggesting going back because he was still hungry. I agreed that I could eat a little more. He got another hotdog and offered to buy me a
banana, which was sweet of him. We went
back to our same spot and conversed until he had to go back to class.
