The class observed on Thursday 11/07/12 was Foundation
Reading
The agenda was clearly posted on the whiteboard, and the
attendance was taken by either an intern.
While waiting for the class to start, a student remarked that this
teacher is very good. Can't remember his
exact words, but they were superlative.
However, many other students came in late with excuses, and they
continued to be preoccupied with during the class. The teacher was consistently firm in
restoring order.
This foundation level lesson used Rhymes to help the
students practice pronunciation and to show that Rhymes are words that end with
the same sound, NOT the same spelling.
Techniques included introducing the topic on the whiteboard, flashcards,
fill-in-the-blanks activities (small group), and class reading aloud. The teacher maximized student participation
in all activities, she teacher consistently corrected pronunciation. During the small group activity, the teacher
enlisted my aid in assisting students with their exercise. It bears repeating that the teacher actively
engaged all students in all activities, and she patiently worked with each in
his or her turn with pronunciation. This
class gave me a good look at the challenges of pronunciation English and some
interesting techniques.
