Paul TP P.J. #6

P.J. and I split our tutoring session in half with math from Friday November 20th onward. We did math first, going over the questions he got wrong on a math test. His first error was easy to explain to him. This was the first incident I had seen of him getting something wrong because of vocabulary instead of comprehension. The question asked how many reptiles there were. Since he did not know exactly what a reptile was, he took a guess and decided to subtract instead of add the numbers. The other math questions he got wrong were a little more difficult because they had more than one step to the problem. After going over them, I showed him some key words to help him figure out if he should add or subtract. We ended up going over each of them and he seems to have understood it all after I explained it.
We did the reading on Franklin the turtle! P.J. was already familiar with the story, so the comprehension aspect was a little bit easier. His reading comprehension has definitely improved since our first study session!
After tutoring him, we talked about seeing him at FSU at the potluck. When I did the chop while talking about it, P.J. asked his mom (in Korean) why Americans use so many gestures. Apparently most Koreans do not use so many gestures. That was a pretty funny cultural difference to find out!!
